The beauty about Japanese art and haiku poetry is its brevity. In art, often the unpainted parts of the canvas say more than what is painted as it leaves more to the imagination. In haiku, what is unsaid speaks louder than what is, as what is said is just a trigger to the receiver's own imagination.

Yes, I agree. Though I probably wouldn't have made the point about poetry as you did, that's exactly what I admire about Asian manuscripts and paintings. I used to spend hours in the Freer Gallery marveling at what wasn't depicted but was expressed. I've been thinking about getting my old volumes of Kenneth Rexroth and Arthur Waley translations off my shelf. Maybe it's time.
